An Indian Summer - 2007

Regent Street will barely be recognisable to you this coming Sunday 2 September 2007, as the famous curve is transformed into an Indian Summer.

The usual music festivals of the summer are all but over, so come to Regent Street for your musical entertainment where Jaipur Kawa Brass Band, the Shree Muktakajeevan Pipe Band and the Dhol Academy will be performing. Offering a slightly different sound than the usual festivals offer, you are sure to find it just as entertaining, if not more so.

On a more contemporary note, Asian artists for you to come and see perform include Niraj Chag, Lippicool, the Panjabi Hit Squad featuring Ms Scandalous, Alyssia and Prithpal. You can dance to the music alongside traditional dance displays such as Manipuri dance and Ranpaa, the latter involving stilts and ankle bells! Though for you this is optional of course…

For those who’d rather shop, there will be discounts aplenty for you to take advantage of on the day. Aquascutum will be offering a 10% discount, along with Penhaligons and Gerry Weber to name but a few. Liberty are also offering discount on a selection of Indian Tea to refresh you when you feel the need, and for something more relaxing, you can treat yourself to an Indian head massages courtesy of Mamas and Papas.

On the food front, many of the restaurants in the food quarter on Heddon Street will be providing Indian delicacies for you to sample. Perhaps you will be tempted by the special Indian menu to be found at Aubaine, or Bentley’s Oyster Bar and Grill where you can get 10% discount if you have a copy of the festival programme on hand. For your sweet tooth, head to Godiva for the chocolate and coconut dipping in store.

Whilst you are enjoying your prawn curry with a glass of fine wine, the children will surely be enraptured by the Goan beach, courtesy of Hamleys, complete with a giant water turtle sculpture and Rajasthani string puppets. If that isn’t enough entertainment, they may also be interested in the body painting available at Frey Wille, helping festival goers to ‘really blend’ in with the festivities!

Finally, if you simply want to take in the sights and enjoy the Indian experience, there will be a bazaar selling spices, herbs and silks as well as Indian magicians. If you’re brave enough, you may wish to have your tarot read at Ted Baker, or perhaps wander up to the Court House Hotel Kempinski for henna hand painting and bindis, on the way taking in the themed window displays presented by a variety of stores especially for the occasion.

Whatever your weekend plans are… shopping, family day out, or just to relax, be sure to do it in Indian style this Sunday 2 September at Regent Street.
