The Cavendish Choice

Valentine’s Day just may be over, but that's no reason to stop the romance With so many restaurants to choose from on and around Regent Street, London is full of options when it comes to booking that table for two.

From a single girl’s point of view, ‘full of options’ actually sounds like a pretty good thing… but for the couple looking for romantic bliss, it probably just spells daunting.

So to make life easier, I took it upon myself to sample the delights of the restaurant at the luxury Cavendish Hotel, taking along one of my male best friends in the role of faux boyfriend. A man who fancies himself as a bit of a 'Don Juan', I hoped he’d be perfect to tell me if it fit the romantic bill. To clarify, this is a man who once told me he knows exactly how to kiss a girl to make her ‘think he’s in love’. With this in mind, I figured if anyone could help me find the perfect place for seduction, it was him.

The Cavendish Hotel is located just off Regent Street on historical Jermyn Street, with a first floor dining room offering gorgeous views of beautiful boutiques. This is fabulous from a lady's point of view, after all, window shopping whilst we eat is quite the idea of heaven. With such bliss, who needs to factor in romance?

Luckily for the male diner, the combination of food, wine & shopping isn't the only seductive quality to be found when dining at the Cavendish...

Serving up a fine menu of modern British cuisine, chef David Britton offers seasonal and regionally sourced ingredients. Although I've always been something of a 'finicky' eater, I was spoilt for choice when it came to my starter, finally selecting the scallops, prawns and mussels – encased in a bed of breadcrumbs it was a delicious dish, one I’d definitely recommend.

Awaiting our main course, we continued to sip on the house white, a light, crisp wine that perfectly complemented each dish – as did the side order of delightful conversation we received from our waiter. Although note to my 'faux date'... to seduce a girl, talking motor car racing with the waiter isn't perhaps the best way to go about it. By this point I was remembering why we always kept our relationship strictly platonic...

My mushroom risotto soon arrived, a firm favourite of mine that didn't disappoint. My 'date' opted for the steak, which even despite his over-choosy orders re cooking, arrived perfectly pink and to his taste. Perhaps I should have mentioned to the Casanova wannabe that it also doesn't do to be fussier than the girl…

In true ‘romantic’ style however, we of course ended up sampling each others. I'm sure to other diners it looked like young lovers sharing everything... In truth, it was a simple case of ‘wanting what you can’t have’. A good sign for restaurants, if not for relationships.

By dessert, I was pleasantly full, but couldn't resist the chocolate mousse with pistachio biscuits, or my 'date's' delicious rhubarb. Coffee of course followed, as did drinks in the bar....

After all, going on this perfect 'romantic' dinner - while enjoyable - only served to remind me that I was without the perfect man (sorry Don Juan), therefore making me determined to find one in the bar downstairs. Besides, I’d already had a sneaky peek at the impressive bar menu, so knew if that plan failed, I’d always be able to count on the cocktails…
