For many Londoners, Christmas just isn’t Christmas until the Regent Street lights are switched on. As the famous curve is lit up, shining, twinkling festive colours fall over the sea of people shopping below, creating the perfect ambience for the season.
This year, the Regent Street lights are pulling out all the stops to produce a dazzlingly entertaining light show designed to connect shoppers at the start of this year’s festive season.
The unique illuminations, entitled Unity, are sponsored by Nokia, to mark the imminent arrival to Regent Street of the Nokia flagship store. Designed to echo the modernity and variety of Regent Street, at the same time the lights this year will enhance its hallmarks; quality, heritage, style and success.
The word ‘unique’ is applied to these installations as for the very first time, those present at this festive event will actually play an active part in lighting up the street. Those eager to attend are encouraged to meet festive entertainers either at the north or south end of Regent Street and walk together to turn the lights on. As you walk, watch in wonder as fourteen light clusters up in the sky light up as you pass, culminating in a beautiful display of light.
Your part in affecting the lights of Regent Street won’t stop there however. On the run up to Christmas, the lights will change their festive formation, responding, via motion cameras, to the density of pedestrians in the street, as well as reacting to factors such as wind speed, the weather and sunlight levels.
After the lights are lit, the fun doesn’t have to end there, as many of the street’s shops will be staying open late for the evening, giving all present the chance to test out the ever changing lights straightaway!
The Regent Street Christmas lights Unity show will begin at 6pm on Tuesday 20 November 2007. Choose a side to arrive at, and meet in the middle in UNITY.
