Delight of Duchamp

Duchamp of Regent Street is celebrating this week after being awarded the accolade of ‘Best Small Shop’ at the Retail Interior Awards.

Over 550 retailers gathered at the awards, held at the Park Lane Hilton on October 1, 2007, to celebrate over ten years of excellence in store design.

Of the 550 stores involved, Duchamp stood out for being ‘a small store, with a big impact’. Selected as winner from a shortlist of seven, it was noted how difficult it can be to make a product both appealing and credible when presented within a small space, particularly in Regent Street, described by the judges as a shopping street where’ some of retail’s finest put their best feet forward’.

The interior of the store however was believed to present such a polished store environment that any effort to overcome the small space seemed almost incidental, prompting passers by to stop and stare. The design incorporates discreet and elegant dark wood furnishings and a perimeter where no two panels are allowed to be the same. Indeed, the shop looks like a store from times gone by, when shops were independently owned and appearance and presentation represented the pride of the owner.

As the judges concluded, small store it may be, but certainly worthy of its flagship status.
