Despite the wide leg trend, don't throw away your skinnies just yet

they're fabulous underneath a wide, structured jacket.

Shapes of the Season

This autumn/winter, say goodbye the casual, laid back summer style of the maxi dress and hello to structured fashion. This season, it’s all about shape.

Taking heed from the styles seen on the catwalk from Gucci, Stella McCartney and PPQ―the latter stocked in Liberty―the high street has this season turned to a more structured silhouette for inspiration. Similar in the glamour stakes to the look of the Hollywood golden era echoed this season in many a wardrobe, the structured look presents glamour with a modern, rock chick edge.

To get the look, head to Coast and choose from anyone of their fabulous party outfits on offer. A personal favourite is the Hattie Hitched skirt. The colour is certainly eye-catching, so keep the rest of the outfit simple. A black top with a sharp cut and minimal accessories will help work the full potential of the look. For those of you who are into your party dresses, Oasis and Principles have many to choose from in an array of colours. Make sure you team with killer heels and work that dance floor to full potential!

To work the look into your daytime style, opt for the Swing jacket from Topshop for a casual take on it, or try the Desent skirt from Ted Baker to help you stay on top at work. The structured style isn’t quite on a par with the shoulder pads from the eighties, but who knows, its strong cut may may give you the same power awarded to Melanie Griffith in Working Girl.

And finally, if this isn’t a look you’d normally go for, and you're a little unsure, why not invest in the black cut detail dress from the Kate Moss collection for Top Shop? After all, if the nation’s style queen never gets it wrong, neither will you.
