“What keeps me designing is the high you get from it. You have no idea!”
– Barbara Hulanicki (Designer – Biba & Habitat)
When fashion label Biba first launched over forty years ago, the popularity of the garments soon made it a bona fide symbol of the Swinging Sixties. Fast forward to the 21st century and designer Barabara Hulanicki’s previous wallpaper prints for furniture store Habitat proved to be equally as popular, prompting the store to persuade her to expand into rugs and cushions for the season ahead.
Designing for Habitat, Barbara is joined by Philippa Prinsloo and Katherine Pulford, Conetta Gallo and Kathy Dulwood, James Patterson and Clare Norcross and finally Bethan Gray and James Harrison, each focusing on different areas and incorporating their own influence into the British store.
For those interested in the design process behind the creation, vodcasts are available to view on Habitat.co.uk, with each designer talking through their creative journey and their personal inspiration. Each week, until October 8, a different designer will tell their tale, kicking off with Hulanicki on September 10. In her vodcast, Hulanicki refers to her love affair with art noveau style, giving a hint of what fans of both Habitat and Biba can expect from her collection.
Not one to do things by halves, Habitat have a whole host of designers involved with their Autumn designs. In addition to those taking part in the vodcasts, Mathew Williamson, Christian Lacroix, Marcel Wanders, Bernie Reid and Julie Opie are hoping for success in the wallpaper department. Williamson, having also previously experienced great success in this department with Habitat, has once again produced a VIP wallpaper design, the launch of which coincides with an exhibition marking his first decade in fashion at London’s Design Museum – proof that Habitat, whether it be students or stalwart fashion names, make a point to work only with the industry’s finest.
