Kristin Knox, 24, is The Clothes Whisperer – aka fashion’s hottest (and possibly its brainiest) blogger.
Born in New York, with an Oxford degree behind her, she now lives in Notting Hill with her Pomeranian dog, Butters.
Since moving to the UK, she’s become a huge fan of Regent Street fashion store Jaeger. Kristin talks baggy pants, her rubbish rivals and puppy love with Alexa Baracaia.
Hi Kristin. So, never mind the ‘clothes whispering’ – I hear whispers you’ve got an MA in Classical Literature from Oxford. Not part of the usual fashionista’s CV...
Haha, well, I wasn’t always a fashionista, even though I always loved fashion and writing. I actually wanted to do a PhD but I realised grad school wasn’t for me. While I was studying I got an internship at the FT style section and it was a perfect fit. Then I started blogging a couple of years ago and it just took off.
You’ve made Notting Hill your base – why?
For me, as an American, it just feels very London. East London, Shoreditch, Angel, they all feel like downtown New York to me, with all those cool warehouse spaces. I just wanted to feel like I was properly living abroad. Plus I moved to London while I was still studying at Oxford and the Oxford Tube stops in Notting Hill!
I’m told you’re a big fan of Jaeger – what’s so special about it?
Well, I have this academic background, this whole other side to me, and I grew up loving Ralph Lauren and the preppy look and Jaeger is like the British equivalent of that. And when I first came to Oxford I wanted to wear tweed blazers and really get into the part, and I found all these amazing Jaeger blazers in vintage stores and realised they were cut really well. Then as I’ve got into fashion it’s just appealed even more – it’s really nice quality and on trend but with this classic heritage element.
So, what key pieces should we be coveting from Jaeger this season?
I love all the silk separates. There are these amazing cream silk harem pants and these tomato red pleated ones. And a really nice silk shorts suit with an oversized blazer that you can wear with anything – jeans, over a maxi dress… It’s so soft you can belt it or slouch it. I’ve got it in white.
Jaeger is bringing out a trendier new line, Jaeger Boutique, this summer. Have you had a sneak peek?
I have! And it’s really cute. Definitely trendy, more bells and whistles – bows, sequins. It’s very girly and glam but with lots of tailoring.
Which pieces should we be grabbing when it hits the rails?
There’s this stunning Chanel-style knitted jacket and skirt suit with a real Luella feel – that’s the thing I’m going to go for. Plus their blousy tops.
After Jaeger, what are your other Regent Street hot spots?
I always go into Anthropologie, it’s home from home for a New York girl! And of course Liberty. I spend hours in the first floor high end women’s wear section, and I always go to the Liberty tea room on the ground floor for food!
So you’re not one of those fashionistas who doesn’t eat?
God, no. I love the afternoon tea at Liberty – I’ll have the scones and rose petal jam and Earl Grey. Liberty is the most dog-friendly store in London. She can come in the tea room with me!
Any more top food tips?
I’m an American, so it’s got to be the brand new Starbucks on Conduit Street.
Now we need your help – what’s a girl to do with all this crazy weather? What can we wear to get us from 30 degrees one day to cool and rainy the next?
Lately I’ve been obsessed with those jersey maxi dresses. When the weather’s nice you can wear them plain or hike ‘em up and tie or belt them so they’re shorter. Then when it’s cooler you can use your dress as a basic layering piece. That’s my top buy to get us through this weather!
What’s the most expensive item you’ve bought?
I guess the one single thing would be a Fendi bag during Milan fashion week. It was 1600 Euros. But usually I find a way to get a discount!
Who’s your top fashion icon?
I don’t get too star struck over designers and stuff like that, but I do when I meet the big magazine editors. Anna Wintour, Franca Sozzani of Italian Vogue… If I see them at an event I’ll just follow them around… Just to be in their orbit [sigh].
What’s Butters’ favourite store?
The Pet Kingdom at Harrods, for sure. She literally can’t contain herself. When she gets in she does this mad loop, like an overexcited kid. She starts with the clothes then the bedding then ends up at the bakery. She should be their mascot!
Who loves dogs most – New Yorkers or Londoners?
Definitely New Yorkers. We think of them as our babies but Londoners think of them as their dogs! In New York gay couples and single girls prepare for getting a puppy like preparing for a child.
Where do you get your hair cut?
Always Bumble & Bumble in New York. I don’t blow dry my hair, I’m not that girl. I’m just not glossy. I’m growing out my bob so I go to Bumble & Bumble twice a year and that’s fine.
What are you working on right now?
I’m working furiously on my new book on world fashion. It’s going to be out next year – it’s all about how traditional dress has influenced western style. Plus I’m doing some styling and consulting, and I’m championing this great young London fashion and jewellery designer, a friend of mine, Robert Clayton. He’s gonna be huge! Then there’s the blogging and the freelance writing. I’m pretty busy.
Have you seen the new Sex and the City film?
I have seen some previews…
What do you reckon? It’s had some pretty poor reviews…
I’m willing to give it a shot! Even if it’s poor, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it anyway. You gotta love the fashion, regardless.
What’s your fave cocktail?
A Cosmo!
Top summer tune?
This minute, I’m loving Keisha’s ‘Your Love is my Drug’
Make-up – lips or eyes?
Neither! I don’t wear make-up. I hate it. I’m not very good at putting it on and when I do I forget and wipe it all over my face.
Flats or heels?
Right now, it’s flats. But I still love heels!
What trend have you spotted on London’s streets this summer?
Well, one thing that isn’t such a good trend and that’s this microfoil print cotton jumpsuit from Zara – I’ve seen it so many times and I think it just looks like pyjamas! It’s not a good look and EVERYONE seems to have it.
Lastly, what boutique’s in your secret black book?
It’s a stall at Portobello Market called Decadent Vintage and run by this mother and daughter team. They do all the vintage stuff for Top Shop but they sell the most amazing dresses on their stall at wholesale. I got this dress that people thought was Givenchy Couture. Plus I got a chiffon python print jumpsuit that gets me stopped in the street every time!
