65 Years of Regent Street Lights

Discover Our Christmas Lights throughout history

We welcomed the return of our Christmas spirits at our annual switch on event on the 14th November, and for the next few weeks these stunning spirits will be lighting up the skies. Our Christmas spirits were actually inspired by Regent Street’s first Christmas lights in 1954 – and were the first ever festive lights scheme in Central London, 65 years ago.

To celebrate our festive history, we’ve partnered with the Museum of London to share a selection of images from its historic collection showcasing the Regent Street Lights of Christmas past, along with some of Regent Street’s flagship shops during the Christmas shopping season... Can you spot Hamleys below?

Be sure to check out the wide range of fun festive family activities at the Museum of London this December – the museum which tells the greatest stories from the greatest city in nine galleries. Meet Santa himself in his Grotto in Victorian Walk, write rib-tickling Christmas cracker jokes, or listen to spooky Christmas ghost stories – if you dare.
