The Modern Man's Essential Kit

Teo van den Broeke, Style Director of British Esquire, brings you the essential kit for the modern man in 2016.

Men, I'm afraid to say, are creatures of habit. Where women will buy into the seasonal trends immediately - the moment they slink off the runways of Paris and Milan and waltz into the shops of the UK - men take a little longer to be convinced. We spend weeks, months, years scouring online and pounding the shops in search of the things we love - the clothes, the gadgets, the shoes - and once we've found them, we tend to remain loyal to them.

I, for instance, am obsessed with slim midnight blue chinos. They need to be just the right cut (slim, but not skinny, with a taper) and just the right shade of blue (very dark, with a touch of charcoal). I found the perfect pair in COS just over four years ago and I've been buying them religiously, season after season, ever since.

Finding the right thing in the first place can be quite a struggle, so I'm going to show you the six items you need in your life right now, and will still want in many years to come.

 The Perfect Cashmere Jumper

Founded in 2014 by the people behind Lululemon, Kit and Ace is a Canadian brand which produces superlative cashmere pieces. Effortlessly stylish, this charcoal cashmere cable knit crew neck will be wearable for the next ten years. Invest now and reap the rewards.

Kit and Ace Fenley Crew - £175.00

The Blue Chinos

No one does affordable, stylish basics like Swedish label COS. The older brother brand to H&M, COS is best when it keeps things simple. Case in point these perfectly cut, cuffed jersey chinos. The fabric is comfortable and has some give, it's also difficult to crease while the tapered shape looks great on long skinny frames. Pair with high top Converse All Stars or brown leather Chelsea boots.

COS  Zip-Cuff Jersey Trousers - £69.00

The Boots

Everyone needs a pair of brown leather boots in their lives. Right now, I'm a big fan of lace up worker styles which look like they will survive a nuclear winter. This pair - the Chippewa for J Crew plain-toe boots, are my pick of the bunch. Treat them well and they'll last you a lifetime, though they'll still go the distance even if you don't.

Original Chippewa® for J.Crew Leather Plain-Toe Boots - £275.00

The Bag

I've carried various navy blue holdalls over the years, but nothing compares to this beautiful navy grain leather version by Burberry. Surprisingly hardwearing, it's as great for taking to the gym as it is on a weekend away. Well worth the investment.

Burberry London Leather Holdall - £1,695.00

The Mac

Humphrey Bogart famously wore an Aquascutum mackintosh for Casablanca in 1942. Stands to reason then, that you should buy your trench coat from Aquascutum too. This, the Corby single breasted in camel with a slimmer cut, is an updated take on the classic shape and more affordable than you might imagine.

Aquascutum  Corby Single Breasted Trench Coat - £650.00

The Headphones

These amazing noise cancelling headphones from Bose are not only perfect for the morning commute thanks to the crisp, clear sound they produce, but they're also great if you need to sleep when flying. Switch on the noise cancelling function to drown out external sound with far more superior results than a regular pair of earplugs.

Bose QuietComfort® 20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® Headphones - £259.95
