On the Street

Here’s to a greener, cleaner West End

Regent Street and St James's sustainably-minded solutions

We don’t usually toot our own horn but we’re proud to share the journey of sustainable transformation The Crown Estate and Westminster City Council have begun on Regent Street and Regent Street St James’s. Read on to learn more about what has been achieved so far and the vision for a greener, healthier, more accessible West End.

The work is designed to deliver significant improvements for safety, accessibility, and air quality, with these positive changes hoping to make your time on the street even more enjoyable.

The first measure is widened pavements – introduced initially as part of the street’s COVID-19 measures to support social distancing. 5,000 sqm of additional pavement space has so far been created for people like you who shop, work and live in the West End.

The traffic has also been reduced to a single vehicle lane in each direction, to cut down on the number of vehicles and reduce air pollution. As part of this planning, cycle lanes have also been introduced and new cycle parking hubs to make cycling in your central London neighbourhood safer and more enjoyable. You can read about a new cycle concierge parking service, BIKE-DROP, here.

Ensuring improved accessibility and safety is crucial for all who visit us, so we’ll also be bettering bus stops to offer enhanced accessible boarding and further space for waiting.

Last but not least, we have introduced sustainable planting, offering more greenery around the area helping to boost biodiversity and improve air quality. This includes 61 semi-mature trees across 16 different species and a total of 325 planters. There’s more than meets the eye to our planting which has air quality and footfall monitors tucked away inside.

Take the time to soak up all these changes and settle down on new seating and benches that have popped up along the length of the iconic curve and down into St James’s.

We hope these plans will offer you even more reason to visit Regent Street – if you'd like to share any feedback please do so here
