La Città è Mobile! a collection of furniture by Hamen & Pacella

La Città è Mobile! a collection of furniture by Hamen & Pacella

The collection of furniture La Città è Mobile! Interprets, at an intermediate scale, the archetypal forms of classical architecture and the traditional wooden building blocks children play with. The designers have used the archetypes of classical architecture, which they see as a cultural product that has over thousands of years permeated our collective subconscious, to measure the effect they still produce on us. The blue and synthetic resin which coats the pieces comes at odds with the historical reference and places the collection "fuori tempo": out of time. Magnified toys or miniature architecture, La Città è Mobile! disrupts our perception of the scale of furniture and invites us, through the anachronistic permanence of ancient forms, to enter a mythological space where time seems suspended, and where the ephemeral reality of daily-life is put in tension with the classical idea of eternity.

To celebrate the pioneering Italian identity during the London Design Festival, Christie’s will present a survey of important Italian Art & Design, featuring works by PierLuigi Giordano, Paolo Buffa and Paolo Venini, which will be offered at auction in October. Recent sales of the Collection of Francesco and Chiara Carraro, and a single-owner sale dedicated to the glass designs of the architect Carlo Scarpa have revealed an exceptional depth of interest in Italian design, positioning Christie’s at the forefront of this important market. In addition, Christie’s also hold the world auction record prices for furniture by Carlo Bugatti, and the top three auction prices for works by the idiosyncratic architect / designer Carlo Mollino.
