The ultimate Pancake Day inspiration

Our roundup of London's best sweet and savoury pancakes

Pancake Day is the time of year when scoffing pancakes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert is a not only acceptable, it’s encouraged. Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday was a feast day to use up eggs, fats and larder items ahead of the 40 days of Lent, and today has evolved into a culinary celebration of the pancake and the wide array of toppings to explore.

What are your favourite pancake toppings? Whether you’re a purist and like to keep it simple or prefer your pancakes loaded with tasty treats, find your perfect pancake in one of central London’s best restaurants…

Buttermilk and blueberries

Buttermilk blueberry pancakes are lighter and brighter, with the zing of blueberry flavour bursting with every bite. Brunch favourites Ziggy Green and Maison Francois serve excellent varieties, with the latter adding lemon crème fraiche and pistachios for an extra crunch.

Fresh berries and syrup

You can't go wrong with fresh fruit piled high atop fluffy pancakes or encased inside a delicious crepe. Elegant Jermyn Street eatery Franco's and The Langham agree – both serve this breakfast staple with a generous dash of maple syrup. Or order straight to your room for the ultimate breakfast in bed at Hotel Café Royal.

Savoury options

A savoury pancake is not to be sniffed at. While streaky bacon with chunky American pancakes may be your first thought, we love Bindas Eatery’s unique Sunday brunch option. Try something different with its spiced vegan chickpea pancakes, served with avo smash. Or sample an authentic Chinese delicacy with Imperial Treasure's delicious lamb pancake.
