About the Essex Native Oyster Restoration Initiative
The Essex Native Oyster Restoration Initiative (ENORI) is one of the UK’s largest marine restoration projects, aiming to bring back thriving populations of native oysters to the Blackwater, Crouch, Roach and Colne Estuaries in Essex. Established in 2011, ENORI is a collaboration between local oystermen, conservation groups, scientists, and government bodies, led by ZSL. The initiative focuses on restoring oyster beds to support biodiversity, improve water quality, and revive sustainable fisheries. https://essexnativeoyster.com/
To support this work, Blue Marine Foundation have partnered with Essex Wildlife Trust and Wright Brothers Ltd to develop a shell recycling scheme. The Shell to Shore project will see shells from London restaurants transported to Abbotts Hall Farm (a site owned by Essex Wildlife Trust) to weather for twelve months. The shells will then be placed onto ENORI restoration sites, to rebuild oyster reefs in Essex estuaries.
About Transforming the Thames
Transforming the Thames is a new multi-million pound restoration initiative being led by ZSL and supported by the Endangered Landscapes and Seascapes Programme. Over the next four years the project aims to reconnect and revitalise over 320 hectares of coastal habitats—including seagrass meadows, saltmarshes, native oyster beds, saline lagoons and seabird nesting habitat.
Driven by a partnership that includes industry, conservation groups, local authorities, academia and government bodies, this is the start of a long-term ambition for the Greater Thames Estuary to become a resilient, world-class coastal wetland that supports biodiversity, mitigates climate change, and enhances local communities’ connection to nature.
